Puerto Limon's Economy
Foundation of Puerto Limon was because of the construction of the railroad from San José (Central Plateau of Costa Rica) in order to export the coffee produced there in around 1870ths.
     
The banana production became a good business for the contractor of the construction Minor C Keith during that time and still now days this is a very important income for Puerto Limon.
     
Other industries formerly important have stopped in a complete way, some of them (lumber and turtle fishing) and partially in others (cocoa and rice).
     

Puerto Limon is a place where unemployment is higher than other regions of Costa Rica, but recently, tourism has become a growing local industry especially because of cruise ships.
